Monemvasia’s First Inn. A Timeless Welcome. An inn in the early 1900s. A distinctive seaside retreat today. At the foot of Monemvasia’s iconic rock, beside the sea, Lazareto Hotel brings together centuries of history and the comforts of a welcoming retreat. Set just 100 metres beyond the bridge leading towards the medieval walled town, its historic buildings offer a distinctive starting point for discovering Monemvasia. The complex dates back to the early 18th century, during the second period of Venetian rule, with references in Venetian records dating to around 1709. Originally built as a lazaretto, it served as a quarantine station for ships’ crews, passengers and goods arriving in Monemvasia, helping protect the town from epidemics. As times changed, so did its purpose. In the early 20th century, the two-storey stone building became Monemvasia’s first inn, welcoming the travellers of its day. During the interwar years, it served as a customs station for the nearby harbour. The complex’s distinctive circular Tower also played a defensive role, serving as a lookout and housing the garrison guarding the approach to the rock. Purchased in 2000 after years of abandonment, the complex was carefully restored with respect for Monemvasia’s traditional architecture. Today, the former lazaretto, the Tower and a neighbouring building dating from 1920 accommodate atmospheric rooms and elegant suites, each with its own character. A seaside garden shaded by centuries-old pine trees surrounds the buildings, while the property’s amphitheatrical layout opens up panoramic sea views from its gardens, terraces, balconies and many of its rooms. The Castle gate is approximately 800 metres away, making it easy to explore the cobbled streets and monuments of the Old Town before returning to the tranquillity of the waterfront. Traditionally furnished rooms combine historic character with modern comforts, including air conditioning and heating, a minibar, television, hairdryer and safe.
